Medicare Advantage Plans in Florida: Are They Right for You?
Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Medicare Part C) are offered by private insurance companies and combine Medicare Parts A and B. Most of these plans also include Part D drug coverage, and many offer extra perks like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits.
In Florida, these plans are widely available. Carriers like Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Florida Blue dominate the market, especially in cities like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. In many counties, you’ll find dozens of Medicare Advantage plans—some with $0 premiums—which make them very attractive.
However, there’s a catch.
Most Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks. That means you need to use doctors and hospitals that participate in the plan to get the best coverage. While some plans like PPOs allow you to go out of network, they come with higher costs or limited access.
This matters a lot in Florida, where many people split time between different regions or travel frequently. If you see out-of-network doctors regularly, those costs can add up quickly.
Another important thing to know: these plans have annual maximum out-of-pocket (MOOP) limits, which can be as high as $8,000 in 2025. So while the premiums may be low, if you need frequent care or hospitalization, your costs can escalate fast.
Medicare Supplement Plans in Florida: Flexibility & Peace of Mind
Now let’s talk about Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap plans. These plans work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and help cover the 20% Medicare doesn’t pay—like deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance.
The most popular Medigap plans in Florida are:
- Plan G – The most comprehensive coverage for new Medicare enrollees, covering everything except the small Part B deductible ($257 in 2025).
- Plan N – Lower premiums than Plan G, but includes co-pays for doctor visits and emergency room visits.
- High Deductible Plan G – Similar to Plan G, but with a lower monthly premium and a higher annual deductible.
The biggest advantage of a Medicare Supplement plan is freedom. You can see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare. There are no networks, no referrals, and no worrying about out-of-network charges.
This flexibility is a huge win if you’re someone who travels often or simply wants the peace of mind that comes with being able to choose your doctors.
What Do Medigap Plans Cost in Florida?
The cost of a Medigap plan varies based on several factors including:
- Your zip code
- Age and gender
- Whether you use tobacco
- The insurance carrier
For a 65-year-old in Florida, Plan G usually ranges from $130 to $180 per month, while Plan N tends to cost a little less.
Keep in mind: Medigap plans don’t include drug coverage, so you’ll also need a Part D prescription plan, which typically costs between $10 and $30 per month for basic coverage, and up to $100 for more comprehensive options.
Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement in Florida: Which Is Best?
Here’s the big question—which type of plan is best?
It depends on your needs, budget, and lifestyle:
Choose Medicare Advantage if:
- You want a low or $0 monthly premium
- You’re okay with network restrictions
- You want extra benefits like dental and vision included
- You want an all-in-one plan with drug coverage
Choose Medicare Supplement (Medigap) if:
- You want maximum flexibility
- You travel or live in multiple states
- You prefer predictable costs with no surprise bills
- You don’t want to worry about networks or referrals
Many of our clients in Florida choose Medigap for its nationwide access, even if the premium is a bit higher. For them, the peace of mind is worth the cost.
Pro Tip: Household Discounts and Special Offers
Here’s a tip for Florida residents: Some carriers offer household discounts for Medigap plans. If you and your spouse enroll with the same company, you may be able to save up to 12% on your premium.
Also, different carriers may charge very different prices for the exact same plan, so it pays to compare.
We recently helped a client save over $1,000 per year by switching from one carrier to another—same plan, same doctors, lower rate.
