What Is Plan N and How Does It Work?
Medicare Supplement Plan N is one of the most popular Medigap options because it provides strong coverage at a lower monthly premium than Plan G. It covers most of the gaps left by Original Medicare, including:
- Hospital costs (Part A coinsurance)
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Hospice care
- Blood transfusions
- 100% of Part B coinsurance—with a few exceptions
Here’s what Plan N does not cover:
- The Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026
- Excess charges, if you see a provider who doesn’t accept Medicare assignment
- Copays: up to $20 for office visits, and up to $50 for ER visits (waived if you’re admitted)
Plan N vs. Plan G vs. High-Deductible Plan G: What’s the Difference?
Let’s compare Plan N to the other most popular Medigap plans:
Plan G
- Covers everything except the Part B deductible
- No copays, no excess charges
- Monthly premium: $100 to $200+, depending on your age and location
- Best for those who want predictable, full coverage
Plan N
- Lower monthly premium than Plan G
- Copays at doctor and ER
- Does not cover excess charges
- Premiums: Typically $20 to $50 less per month than Plan G
High-Deductible Plan G
- Same coverage as Plan G, but you must pay a $2,950 annual deductible (2026)
- Lowest monthly premium, typically $40 to $60 per month
- Best for those who are healthy and want coverage for big-ticket items only
Is Plan N Worth It Financially?
Here’s where Plan N really shines: it can offer solid protection while saving you money on your monthly premium.
We recently worked with a client in Texas who was paying $180/month for Plan G. After reviewing her health needs—just a few doctor visits per year—we switched her to Plan N at $140/month.
Her new plan:
- Still lets her see any Medicare doctor nationwide
- Only adds a few small co-pays a year
- Saves her $480 annually
Even with a few $20 co-pays, she’s coming out ahead.
When Plan N Might NOT Be Worth It
While Plan N is a great option for many, it’s not ideal for everyone. Here’s when you might want to choose Plan G instead:
1. You see specialists often
Copays can add up. If you’re seeing a specialist every other week, those $20 visits may quickly outweigh the monthly savings from a cheaper premium.
2. You want to avoid excess charges
While excess charges are rare (most doctors accept Medicare assignment), they do happen. And if your provider doesn’t accept Medicare assignment, you could be billed up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount. If this is a concern, Plan G will give you peace of mind.
3. You want zero billing surprises
Some people prefer to pay more upfront in premiums to eliminate co-pays and potential charges later. If that sounds like you, Plan G might be the better fit.
The Middle Ground: Why Plan N Still Makes Sense for Many
Despite the few co-pays and rare risk of excess charges, Plan N is still one of the best values in Medicare Supplement coverage—especially if:
- You’re generally healthy
- You don’t mind paying a few small copays
- You want to save $300 to $600 per year in premiums compared to Plan G
Plan N also gives you access to any doctor in the U.S. who accepts Medicare, just like Plan G and High-Deductible Plan G—so there are no networks or referrals to worry about.
Comparing Monthly Costs: What You Can Expect
Here’s a quick cost snapshot to help you decide:
| Plan Type | Monthly Premium Range | Annual Deductible | Co-Pays | Excess Charges |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan G | $100–$200+ | $283 | None | Covered |
| Plan N | $85–$160 | $283 | Up to $20 office, $50 ER | Not Covered |
| High-Deductible G | $40–$60 | $2,950 | None after deductible | Covered |

So, Is Plan N Worth It?
The short answer: Yes—if it matches your health needs and budget.
- It’s more affordable than Plan G while still offering strong coverage.
- You’ll have some cost-sharing, but for many people, the savings outweigh those costs.
- You’ll still enjoy Medicare’s full nationwide network and avoid the limitations of Medicare Advantage plans.
But if you prefer to avoid all copays, worry about excess charges, or simply want predictable costs, Plan G may be the better option.
