Central States Indemnity was formed in 1977. The parent company of CSI, Central States Health and Life Co. of Omaha, has been around since 1932.
Initially, the company focused on providing casualty and unemployment insurance. In 1992, 15 years after its inception, Warren Buffett’s, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. acquired CSI. CSI is licensed to provide its insurance products all across the US and in Puerto Rico and Guam.
The company has a subsidiary focusing on life insurance, the CSI Life Insurance Company. CSI Life is a subsidiary of Central States Indemnity. Both CSI and CSI life maintain an A.M.s Best rating of A+.
The motto of the company since the time it started operating has been to provide simple access to insurance solutions. They still adhere to their values and make acquiring insurance easier for their clients, offering health insurance, accident insurance, and property insurance, among a range of other products and services.
They also offer specialty insurance solutions, including disability and life insurance, and have so served millions of individuals across the US.
A key strength of Central States Indemnity has been their promptness. They respond immediately whenever a customer gets in touch with them regarding a claim, query or feedback.
Their strong financial rating is an indication of their superior performance over the years. Plus, they have the capability to back the policies they provide without hassle. Being part of Berkshire Hathaway adds to their financial strength and they leverage the experience and expertise of their team to facilitate customers in the best possible way.
In addition to their core products, Central States Indemnity also offers a range of Medigap solutions. Their Medicare Supplement Plans offer customers a variety of choices, going from Plan A to Plan N, varying in terms of coverage and cost. This means that you have the flexibility to select that best suits your needs and budget.
Medicare Supplement Plans From CSI
With a Medicare Supplement plan from CSI you get the following:
- Portable coverage
- Guaranteed renewable for life
- Competitive premium
CSI Medicare Supplement Plan F
A majority of folks opt for the Medicare Supplement Plan F offered by Central States Indemnity. Plan F is a popular option because it covers 100% of all costs that Medicare does not pay in full.
Plan F is also the most expensive supplement plan. For this reason, many folks are turning to Plan G as a better, most cost-effective solution.

CSI Medicare Supplement Plan G
Plan G is an effective alternative to Plan F.
You get all the features and benefits of Plan F, with the sole exception being that you have to pay the Medicare Part B deductible.
However, that isn’t much of a deal breaker as the deductible is $183 in 2017. Since you have to pay a lower premium, the cost is covered over the long run.
We recommend Plan G over Plan F for reasons explained here.
CSI Life Medicare Supplement Plan N
Under Plan N, you receive basic coverage and the Medicare Part A deductible is covered as well.
You have to bear the cost of the Part B deductible and any excess charges under Part B.
You will have a co-pay up to $20 for each doctor’s visit and a maximum of $50 for emergency room visits (waived if admitted).
Plan N can be a great option for folks who don’t see the doctor very often and are looking to save money on premium.
Overall we recommend CSI/CSI Life for your Medicare supplement insurance company.
They are a great carrier, backed by a strong parent company; Berkshire Hathaway.
CSI is competitive in most states they are licensed in. In addition, they have shown to have stable rate increases on their Medigap plans.
