Most Medicare approved charges are generally covered by original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B). Medigap plans are designed to cover about 20% of medical expenses that Original Medicare does not cover, because they place no limits on out-of-pocket expenses.
There are private insurance companies like Cigna that offer Medicare Supplement plans. The benefit of these plans is that you can choose any health care provider in the United States that accepts Medicare.
What is covered by Cigna Medicare Supplement Plan N?
- Hospital coinsurance costs for Medicare Part A after Medicare benefits have expired for up to 365 days
- First three pints of blood
- Part A Hospice Care co-payment or coinsurance
- Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility care
- Medicare Part A deductible
- Foreign travel (up to plan limits)
- Part B coinsurance
Is there a deductible for Cigna’s Medicare Supplement Plan N?
Cigna Medigap Plan N does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible. This deductible is $226 in 2023. Other out-of-pocket expenses include copayments up to $20 per office visit, $50 for E.R. visits and Medicare Part B Excess charges are not covered.
All Medicare Supplement plans have a deductible now that Plan F is no longer for sale to people new to people who became eligible for Medicare Part A after January 1st 2020.
What Is The Rate Increase History for Cigna Medicare Supplement N?
It is likely that insurance rate increases will be related to age unless the company uses the Community model for their rates. In general, insurance rate increases are approximately 3% -5%.
Inflation, rising healthcare costs, and other economic factors can drive rate increases.
Among the factors that determine a company’s rate increase are the number of claims it receives in a year and the amount of premiums it receives from clients. With Medigap N, Cigna has a history of rate increases lower than most other plans. Historically Plan N has lower rate increases than Plan G and Plan F.
Medicare Supplement Plan N vs Plan G
It is impossible to choose the best Medigap Supplement plan for everyone. Medicare beneficiaries’ medical needs, frequency of doctor visits, and need for other healthcare services will determine the amount of benefits they receive.
In Medicare Supplements N and G, the main difference is that Supplement N does not cover Part B excess charges, while Supplement G does. Excess charges occur if you go to a provider that does not accept Medicare Assignment. In this case, the provider can overcharge the Medicare approved amount by 15%.
If you receive your healthcare from providers that accept Medicare assignment and do not expect to change providers, the excess charges may not be an issue. Should you need to see a different doctor, such as a specialist, be sure to ask ahead of time if they accept Medicare Assignment. If not, try to find one who does.
Plans N would be an option if you want lower monthly premiums and are prepared to pay some copayments (up to $20 for doctor visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits) in addition to the Part B deductible.
You might find it easier to pay a slightly higher premium with Plan G and have your Part B coinsurance paid in full once your deductible has been met if your doctor visits are frequent and/or you see multiple doctors frequently.
