United American Carrier Background
United American was initially established in 1947, and the company started to offer Medicare Supplement insurance plans in 1966. In 1982, United American became a member of the Torchmark Corporation, a financial services holding company that specializes in life insurance and supplemental health products and services. They have four core values when serving their clients, which are: stability, quality, service, and commitment.
United American Financial Strength
For more than 40 consecutive years, United American Insurance Company has held an A+ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best Company. The company is also rated as AA- (Very Strong) by Standard Poors. This indicates a strong overall financial strength of the company.
When folks sign up for United American Medigap plans they get the following: a 30-day free look period, household discount on the premium (where available), portable coverage, the ability to see any doctor/provider that accepts Medicare, top-notch customer service, and a fast claim handling experience.
Yes! With United American folks can sign up for high deductible Plan F and high deductible Plan G. United American offers ten different Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance plans. These include Plan A, which offers a core set of benefits, as well as Plans F and G that are much more comprehensive in terms of coverage.
Although the availability of plans may vary by state, the ten plan options are Plans A through N. A common question we see is if veterans need a Medicare supplement even if they already receive VA benefits.
Regardless of which plan you choose or your situation, all of the Medigap options that are offered through United American offer at least some coverage for the following (in some cases, the insurer will pay just a portion of the benefit, such as 50% for the three pints of blood):
Hospitalization
- Medical Expenses (such as doctor visits and/or lab tests)
- Blood (the first three pints each year)
- Hospice
United American Medicare Supplement Plan F
Medicare Supplement Plan F is considered to be the most comprehensive of all Medigap plans. With this plan, the following coverage is included, (this plan is considered 100% coverage):
- Medicare Part A Coinsurance
- Medicare Part B Coinsurance (100%)
- First three pints of blood each year
- Hospice care
- Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance
- Medicare Part A Deductible
- Medicare Part B Deductible
- Excess Doctor Charges
- Foreign Travel Emergency
It is important to note that people who turned 65 or started Medicare Part A after Jan 1st, 2020 cannot purchase a Plan F or High deductible Plan F. Those who turned 65 prior to Jan 1st, 2020 can still purchase a Plan F or a High Deductible G.
Take a look at how United American Insurance company Plan F compares to other carriers like Gerber Life Medicare supplement or Physicians Mutual Medigap.
United American Medicare High Deductible Plan F
Because of its highly comprehensive coverage, Medigap Plan F will typically require a higher premium payment. But there is an option for still getting all of the Plan F benefits, without having to pay a large premium amount. This is through the High Deductible Plan F.
With the High Deductible Plan F, the plan pays out the same benefits as the regular Medigap Plan F coverage, after you have satisfied an annual calendar year deductible. In 2021, this deductible amount is $2,370.
The out-of-pocket expenses for this plan’s deductible are those that are typically paid by the policy, which can include Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles. (However, this does not include the separate foreign travel emergency deductible).
United American Medicare Supplement Plan G
Another comprehensive Medicare Supplement insurance option that can be purchased through United American is Plan G. With a Medigap Plan G, you receive all of the coverage that is provided via Plan F, with the exception of payment for the Medicare Part B deductible.
- Medicare Part A Coinsurance
- Medicare Part B Coinsurance (100%)
- First three pints of blood each year
- Hospice
- Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance
- Medicare Part A Deductible
- Excess Doctor Charges
- Foreign Travel Emergency
What’s Not Covered?:
- Medicare Part B Deductible
The primary difference between Medigap Plan F and Plan G is that Plan G does not cover the payment for the Medicare Part B deductible. In , the annual Medicare Part B deductible is $257.
So, it can be well worth it to compare whether the higher premium cost of Plan F is to your advantage, or if Plan G would be the better alternative.
United American Medigap High Deductible Plan G
For folks who are new to Medicare in 2020 or later will not be able to purchase a Plan F or High Deductible Plan F. Alternatively, High Deductible Plan G will be available. This plan is essentially the same High Deductible Plan F except the Part B deductible is not covered.

United American Medicare Supplemental Plan N
Plan N is also fairly comprehensive with regard to its coverage. With Medigap Plan N, you receive the same basic coverage that is offered with Plan G, (other than the office visit copays and coverage for excess charges). These benefits include:
- Medicare Part A Coinsurance
- Medicare Part B Coinsurance ($0 – $20 office visit copayment)
- First three pints of blood each year
- Hospice
- Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance
- Medicare Part A Deductible
- Foreign Travel Emergency
What Is Not Covered?
- Medicare Part B Deductible ($257 in )
- Medicare Part B Excess Charges
Also, Medigap Plan N requires a co-payment of up to $20 for doctor’s office visits, as well as a co-payment of up to $50 for an emergency room visit. If you are admitted to the hospital, though, your emergency room co-payment will be waived.
United American Medigap Rates and Costs
Even though the coverage offered with Medicare Supplement plans of the same letter must be identical (for instance, all Plan G’s are the same, regardless of the carrier that offers it, as regulated by the Federal Government), but the costs can differ, depending on where you purchase the policy.
Because of that, it is important that you compare Medigap insurance rates before you commit to purchasing a plan. We offer the ability to compare live rates from top carriers on our website, you can start your free comparison here.
When comparing Medicare plan premiums, working with an independent insurance professional can provide you with a convenient and time-saving alternative versus contacting each of the insurance companies separately on your own.
How to Apply For A Medigap Plan With United American?
If you are ready to move forward with the purchase of a Medicare Supplement insurance plan from United American, you can do so during your Medigap open enrollment period. This period starts the first of the month you turn 65 or Start Medicare Part B and lasts for 6 months.
By applying during this window of time, you can’t be denied coverage, even if you have an adverse health condition. You also cannot be charged higher premium rates.
If you already have a Medigap policy and you would like to switch to a different Medigap plan, you may be able to do so at any time, provided that you go through the underwriting process and are approved for the new plan.
