Why New Jersey Is Unique
New Jersey has one of the largest Medicare populations in the country. That means:
- Dozens of Medicare Advantage plans (varies by county).
- Competitive Medigap (Supplement) plans like Plan G and Plan N.
- Standardized benefits across carriers—but premiums differ.
So while the coverage may be the same, the cost can vary dramatically depending on which company you choose.
Option 1: Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Medigap plans are best if you want predictable costs and nationwide access to doctors. You can see any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare—no networks, no referrals.
Most popular choices in New Jersey:
- Plan G: Covers everything except the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). After that, you’ll have virtually no out-of-pocket costs.
- Plan N: Lower premiums than Plan G. Includes small copays for doctor and ER visits and may have Part B excess charges (rare, but possible).
Both are excellent for peace of mind, especially if you travel or just want simple, predictable coverage.
Option 2: Medicare Advantage
New Jersey also offers a large selection of Medicare Advantage plans (Part C).
These private plans:
But there are trade-offs:
- Advantage plans use provider networks (your doctors must be in-network).
- Out-of-pocket costs can range from a few thousand up to $10,000+ per year.
- Benefits and networks can change annually.
While Advantage plans can be attractive for the low premium and extras, make sure you understand the potential risks.
Medigap vs. Advantage: Which Is Better?
- Medigap (Plan G or N): Higher monthly premiums, but nearly no out-of-pocket costs. Works nationwide. Best for people who want freedom and predictable expenses.
- Medicare Advantage: Often $0 monthly premium, extras included, but networks and higher out-of-pocket risk. Best for people comfortable with managed care and who want lower upfront costs.
Our Recommendation
If you can afford it, a Medigap Plan G or N is typically the strongest coverage option in New Jersey. If budget is tight, a PPO Advantage plan may still provide good value—just be sure your doctors and medications are covered.
