Amerigroup Company History and Background
Amerigroup is an Anthem-owned company. Back in 1994, Amerigroup was initially founded as Americaid Community Care, with the mission of serving the needs of children, mothers, and pregnant women who were enrolled in Medicaid.
Throughout the years, the company grew, and in 2006, Medicare Advantage plans were offered. In 2012, Anthem acquired Amerigroup. The company’s headquarters are located in Virginia Beach, VA.
Today, Amerigroup provides coverage to nearly 8 million people – and it is the largest provider of health care for public programs in the United States. In addition to Medicare Supplement coverage, this company also offers Medicare Advantage plans, combined Medicare and Medicaid coverage, and low-cost Medicaid for adults, children, and families.
Yes, with Amerigroup Medigap plans you are guaranteed to have the life of the plan as long as you pay the monthly premiums. This assures that you have full-time coverage without the hassle of having to renew each year.

The Medigap Plans offered through Amerigroup include the following benefits:
• A 30-day “free look” period

• Household discount on the premium (where available)
• Portable coverage
• Option to see any doctor that accepts Medicare, no referral needed
Amerigroup Medigap Plan F
With Amerigroup’s Medicare Supplement Plan F, there is a long list of benefits included. Medigap Plan F is the most comprehensive of the Medigap plans. However, starting in the year 2020, new enrollees will not be able to purchase Medicare Supplement Plan F. (Current Plan F enrollees, however, will be able to keep this coverage).

Amerigroup Medicare Advantage Plans
While Amerigroup contracts with the federal government to provide Medicaid and combination Medicare / Medicaid coverage, the company’s primary product is Medicare Advantage. It does so under the Amerivantage name. Currently, the Amerigroup Medicare Advantage plans are offered in Texas, Tennessee, Texas, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Washington.
Medicare Advantage (also known as Medicare Part C) offers an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits. These plans offer the same benefits that are found in Medicare Part A and Part B, but you may also have additional coverage such as vision and/or dental.
Many Medicare Advantage plans will also include Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits. Medicare Advantage plans are offered through private insurance companies (as versus directly via Medicare). Oftentimes these plans are offered as an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) or PPO (Preferred Provider Organization).
With the HMO and PPO plan options, there are some similarities. For instance, you must live within the plan’s service area. In addition, both HMOs and PPOs also use provider networks. However, a PPO will allow you to see out-of-network providers, too – typically in return for paying a higher copayment or coinsurance amount. Also, with a Medicare Advantage PPO, you are not required to choose a primary care provider. Nor are you required to obtain a referral before seeing a specialist.
Overall, the best Medicare plan for you will depend on the benefits and flexibility that fit your specific needs. For instance, Medicare Supplement plans provide you with the freedom to receive care from any doctor, specialist, or hospital that accepts Medicare.
On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans often require enrollees to receive care through provider networks, but may also offer some additional coverage options that you don’t get with Medicare Parts A and B and Medicare Supplement.
